Modern Warfare 4’s Campaign challenges go beyond simply finishing the story. Most ask you to complete a specific action inside a mission, such as protecting civilians, using a required weapon, finding collectibles, or clearing an encounter under a difficulty restriction. These objectives are completely separate from Bot Lobby MW4 progression, so Campaign completion is best handled with a planned first run followed by targeted Mission Select cleanup.
How to Approach MW4 Campaign Challenges
You do not need to play every mission on the highest difficulty just to clear its optional challenge. Several objectives have their own stated difficulty requirement, while others only care about the action performed during the mission.
A clean completion plan is:
- Finish the Campaign once while completing straightforward objectives you encounter naturally.
- Slow down in collectible-heavy missions such as Following Orders and Stranded.
- Replay missed mission challenges instead of restarting the entire Campaign.
- Use the required difficulty only where necessary for Hardened- and Veteran-specific challenges.
- Handle full-Campaign difficulty goals separately after learning the missions.
This keeps exploration, special combat conditions, and difficulty progression from interfering with each other.
Mayhem: Skeet Shooting
Requirement: Kill 10 paratroopers before they hit the ground.
The important condition is the enemy’s state when the kill occurs. Once a paratrooper reaches the ground, eliminating that target no longer contributes to Skeet Shooting.
Best Approach
- Prioritize enemies who are still descending.
- Ignore landed paratroopers when airborne targets are available.
- Keep your aim moving between descending targets instead of spending too long tracking one enemy.
- This challenge rewards target selection more than ordinary ground clearing.
Out in the Cold: Safety’s On and Can’t Touch This
Out in the Cold contains two of the more restrictive Campaign challenges.
Safety’s On
Requirement: Defeat all enemies in the kitchen without firing your gun on Hardened or harder.
The restriction is specifically tied to firing your weapon. Treat the kitchen encounter as its own challenge attempt rather than falling back on normal gunplay.
Can’t Touch This
Requirement: Defeat Makarov on Veteran difficulty or higher without getting hit in the alley.
This challenge has two conditions at once: the required difficulty and the no-hit restriction. Winning the encounter on Veteran is not enough if Makarov lands a hit during the required section.
Prioritize avoiding damage over trying to end the encounter as quickly as possible.
Following Orders: No Stone Unturned and No Harm Done
Following Orders rewards careful exploration and controlled combat rather than speed.
No Stone Unturned
Requirement: Confiscate all contraband and read all Notes in Following Orders.
Do not move directly from one primary objective to the next. Search the accessible spaces in each section before advancing, especially when progression could move you away from an area you have not fully checked.
No Harm Done
Requirement: Obtain the defector’s location without hurting any civilians.
This is a restraint challenge. Identify targets before attacking and avoid unnecessary shots around civilians.
Following Orders priority:
- Deal with immediate threats.
- Search the current area for contraband.
- Check for readable Notes.
- Avoid damaging civilians.
- Continue the investigation only after finishing your local search.
Hired Gun: Bullet Train
Requirement: Kill 50 enemies while standing on train cars.
Your position is part of the requirement. Kills made elsewhere in Hired Gun do not satisfy Bullet Train simply because they happen during the same mission.
Stay on the train cars when the mission gives you viable targets and accumulate qualifying kills throughout those combat sections. Leaving the required position too early can turn this into an unnecessary replay.
Losing Ground: Raining Thunder
Requirement: Kill 15 enemies with three mortar rounds in a row.
Raining Thunder rewards efficient mortar placement. Firing at isolated targets wastes the limited three-round sequence, so wait for groups before committing a shot.
Mortar priority: enemy concentration first, clean placement second, firing speed last.
Do not rush the three shots simply because the mortar is ready.
Assassins: Revenge and Pacifist
Assassins contains two challenges with opposing requirements, making separate attempts the practical solution.
Revenge
Requirement: Kill everyone after Shin dies on Hardened or harder.
Once Shin’s death triggers the relevant part of the mission, your objective changes to eliminating the remaining enemies. Make sure the run is already on the required difficulty.
Pacifist
Requirement: Complete Assassins while killing only one enemy.
Avoid unnecessary lethal engagements and do not clear enemies simply because they are available targets.
Stranded: Complete the Exploration Challenges Together
Stranded contains several challenges that reward thorough exploration and careful objective management.
Stranded Checklist
- Time to Crate: Open every Yellow Supply Crate in Stranded.
- Scavenger: Repair everything in Base Camp.
- Incoming!: Destroy every vehicle reinforcement at the SAM Site before the troops unload.
- Noteworthy: Read 50 different Notes.
Time to Crate requires every Yellow Supply Crate, so opening enough crates for your immediate equipment needs is not sufficient. Search optional spaces before leaving an area.
Incoming! has a strict timing condition. The reinforcement vehicle must be destroyed before its occupants unload. Prioritize incoming vehicles as soon as they enter the encounter rather than fighting deployed infantry first.
Noteworthy is broader than the Stranded-specific crate objective. Build Note progress throughout the Campaign instead of treating it as a single-mission collectible run.
Counter Attack: Long Shot
Requirement: Snipe all four enemies firing the mortars.
The important word is snipe. Do not accidentally eliminate one of the four mortar operators with another weapon or damage source before completing the required sniper kills.
Identify the mortar operators first, then remove all four using the required method.
Escape: Never Forgotten
Requirement: Recover the Dog Tags.
Never Forgotten is a collectible-focused challenge rather than a kill requirement. Do not let the pressure to move through Escape make you skip the required Dog Tags.
If you are doing a dedicated achievement cleanup run, treat collecting them as part of the mission objective before pushing toward completion.
Entrenched: Trench Broom
Requirement: Kill 15 enemies with a shotgun before securing the Target Building.
Both conditions matter: the kills must come from a shotgun, and you must reach the required total before securing the Target Building.
Safe Completion Order
- Equip or obtain the required shotgun before committing to the kill grind.
- Prioritize qualifying shotgun kills during available encounters.
- Track your progress before advancing the main objective.
- Secure the Target Building only after the challenge condition is satisfied.
- Advancing too quickly is the main mistake to avoid here.
Quick Reference: Difficulty-Restricted Challenges
| Challenge | Difficulty Requirement | Main Condition |
| Safety’s On | Hardened or harder | Clear the kitchen without firing your gun |
| Can’t Touch This | Veteran or higher | Defeat Makarov without getting hit in the alley |
| Revenge | Hardened or harder | Kill everyone after Shin dies |
These are the mission-specific challenges where difficulty is explicitly part of the requirement. Do not raise the difficulty for every other cleanup attempt unless you are also working toward a broader difficulty-completion goal.
Campaign Challenges and Standard Rewards Are Separate
Campaign achievements should not be confused with the rewards earned through normal story progression. Modern Warfare 4 has a separate sequence of Campaign completion rewards that includes the Cho, Dallas, Luca, Oh-Ji, Kal, Dunn, West, and Park Base Operators, alongside Double XP Tokens, Double Weapon XP Tokens, the No More Rules Calling Card, Ready Line Loading Screen, and Gone Dark Emblem.
Those standard Campaign rewards are progression unlocks rather than rewards for completing special conditions such as Skeet Shooting or Pacifist. You therefore do not need to complete every optional challenge before benefiting from normal Campaign progression.
Elite Campaign Mastery Comes After Achievement Cleanup
The Career challenge system also contains an Elite Campaign Mastery category. Its confirmed Calling Card challenges are Veteran Completer, Realism Completer, and YOLO Completer.
Keep this system separate from mission achievements. A challenge such as Bullet Train or Time to Crate asks you to perform a specific task inside a mission, while Elite Campaign Mastery is a broader Career progression target.
For that reason, finish ordinary mission cleanup before making Elite Campaign Mastery your priority. Knowing enemy positions, objective transitions, and the dangerous parts of each mission will make later difficulty-focused runs easier to manage.
Best MW4 Campaign Challenge Completion Order
For an efficient completion run, group objectives by the type of replay they require rather than repeatedly running the Campaign from beginning to end.
First pass: Finish the story, collect Notes as you find them, and complete straightforward mission challenges without slowing every encounter to a crawl.
Exploration pass: Clean up No Stone Unturned, Time to Crate, Scavenger, Never Forgotten, and any missing Note progress.
Combat pass: Target Skeet Shooting, Bullet Train, Raining Thunder, Long Shot, and Trench Broom under the exact conditions stated by each challenge.
Restricted pass: Return to Out in the Cold and Assassins for Safety’s On, Can’t Touch This, Revenge, and Pacifist. Keep Revenge and Pacifist on separate attempts.
Once the Campaign-specific cleanup is finished, you can shift attention to Multiplayer, DMZ, or Career mastery instead of repeatedly replaying story missions. Players who later move into extraction progression may encounter options to buy MW4 DMZ Cash, but DMZ resources do not contribute to Campaign challenge completion and should be treated as a separate progression system.
Use Mission Select for anything you miss rather than restarting the story. Prioritize challenges with strict failure conditions first during each replay, finish exploration objectives before triggering major progression points, and leave Elite Campaign Mastery until you already know the Campaign well enough to handle its higher-difficulty goals consistently.
